Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee addressed the Oakland community at a press conference on Thursday, in a response to the Trump administration’s calling out of the East Bay city when announcing he would send National Guard troops into the nation's capital.

The city of Oakland shared new data on Thursday which pointed to a significant reduction in reported crimes for the first half of 2025.

What an inspiring afternoon at Wednesday’s Metro Chamber East Bay Women in Leadership luncheon at Scott’s Seafood!
Had the privilege of delivering opening remarks alongside Dr. Ching-Hua Wang, President of Samuel Merritt University, about their exciting new downtown campus opening in January 2026. This will bring 2,500 students and 1,500 faculty right to our city center - exactly the kind of energy and economic activity that helps our local businesses and community thrive.
Thank you to Barbara Leslie and the Metro Chamber for hosting this important conversation with 85 women leaders from across the East Bay. When our business community, educators, and civic leaders work together, that’s how we move Oakland forward!

Today I joined community leaders, local banks and merchants, and our dedicated city department heads at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center to address the recent crimes affecting our Chinatown and Little Saigon businesses.

Small businesses are the beating heart of our community, and everyone deserves to feel safe in their workplace and neighborhood. I heard directly from our merchants and banks about their concerns and safety measures we will take together—from storefront and traffic calming measures, to police presence, to technology. Thank you to Police Chief Floyd Mitchell, City Administrator Jestin Johnson, Building & Planning Director William Gilchrist, Transportation Director Josh Rowan, Economic Development’s Cristy Johnston, and to Stewart Chen, Tony Trinh, and the Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council for this important discussion.

Last night I had dinner with our amazing interns. Bright and motivated, these change-makers are truly the future of Oakland.

Love that I got a chance to visit the Olive Street Agency today in East Oakland. Black owned, woman owned and keeping creative talent right here in our Town.
